The Brightest Star

Nancy returned from school in the evening. She kept her bag on the table and threw herself on the couch. Elizabeth noticed Nancy’s mood.

“Is everything okay?” asked Elizabeth.

“Yes, mom.”

“Go freshen up, I’ll give you a cup of hot milk and some cookies.”

“Okay,” said Nancy. She slowly picked herself up and unenthusiastically walked to the bathroom.

After having her milk and cookies, Nancy completed her homework for the day. She played for sometime and then sat to watch television. As the clock struck eight, it was time for dinner.

“Dinner is ready, Nancy.”

“Coming, mom.”

After a nourishing dinner, Nancy helped Elizabeth clear the table and the kitchen. It was almost 9 o’clock on a beautiful starry night.

“Nancy, it’s time for bed,” called Elizabeth.

Nancy retired to her room and to her bed by the window. Elizabeth sat on the bed near the pillow.

“Come to me, darling,” said Elizabeth. Nancy lied down with her head in her mother’s lap.

“Would you like to talk about your day, love?” asked Elizabeth.

“It was, let me say, not very good. The other kids did not talk to me today.”

“What about the girl you met on the bus?”

“Her name is Tina. The others did not speak to her either.”

“Don’t be disheartened, Nancy. In life, remember, never be in a hurry. All good things take time. A new school, new friendships, new relationships they all take time. Remember, trust is a slow growing tree.”

Nancy was quiet as she stared at the night sky through the window.

“Why do we have challenges in life, mom?”

“Because God wants us to be strong. Challenges don’t come to break you, they come to make you. To make you stronger. Life is like a roller coaster. When you’re riding the upward curve, be humble and grateful. When you’re on the way down, be strong and resilient,” explained Elizabeth.

A smile appeared on Nancy’s face.

“Thank you, mom. Your words are so soothing.”

“You’re welcome, Nancy. Tomorrow is a new day and a new opportunity, are we ready?”

“Yes we are, mom.”

“That’s great, go to sleep now.” Elizabeth sang a lullaby and gently patted Nancy on the head as she started to fall asleep.

“Mom,” said Nancy suddenly.

“What is it, dear?”

“You’re my sunshine by day and the brightest star at night!”

“Thank you, my love,” Elizabeth’s eyes became moist. She kissed Nancy on the forehead and remained with her until she fell asleep.
