Forgive and Forget

Nancy looked very upset when she returned from school one evening.

“What’s the matter, Nancy?”

“I’m very upset, mom.”

“I can see that. Why are you upset?”

“Tina,” replied Nancy. “I am upset with her.”

“What did she do?”

“Well, she was very rude and when I checked her she got angry,” replied Nancy. “We had a fight and I don’t want to talk her ever again.”

“Don’t say that, she’s your friend,” explained Elizabeth.

“Was,” said Nancy. “She was my friend.”

Nancy changed and had her milk and cookies. She tried to complete her homework but wasn’t able to concentrate. Elizabeth try to engage her in some play but that did not work either. Nancy was just too upset about the altercation with Tina.

“Why does it hurt so much?” asked Nancy, still very sad.

“It’s ok to feel hurt, Nancy. Don’t bottle up your emotions,” said Elizabeth.

Hearing her words, Nancy broke down and wept profusely. Elizabeth allowed her to cry before wiping her tears and offering her water. Just then, the door bell rang.

Elizabeth opened the door to see Tina standing there. Tina’s cheeks were red and eyes were swollen, obviously she had been crying too.

“Nancy, someone is here for you,” called Elizabeth.

“Who is it, mom?”

“Come and see for yourself,” said Elizabeth.

Nancy came to the door and stopped upon seeing Tina. She immediately became concerned seeing Tina’s swollen eyes.

“Are you ok, Tina?” enquired Nancy.

“Nancy, I am sorry,” said Tina and broke down.

Looking at Tina weeping, Nancy couldn’t hold back. She rushed over and hugged Tina.

“It’s ok, Tina,” she said trying to calm her.

“I’m sorry, I was so rude to you,” said Tina.

“It’s ok, my friend,” reassured Nancy. “Don’t bottle up your feelings.”

Elizabeth’s eyes welled up with tears seeing the innocence of children. She thought, ‘Can we as adults learn to forgive and forget as easily as these kids?’

Nancy wiped Tina’s tears and offered her a glass of water. Tina was grateful to her friend and looked relieved. For the first time that day, Elizabeth saw a smile on Nancy’s face.

“Come, Tina, let’s play with my Lego blocks,” said Nancy.

“Sure,” said Tina.

Holding hands, the girls went to Nancy’s room to play and just like that the girls were happy again.
