The other side

A young man had just moved into his new home. His new home had a cozy house and a beautiful garden attached to it. In fact, this was the theme of the pristine town, all the homes had gardens attached to them, one beside the other and on either side of the roads, it looked like a town within a big garden.

Sitting on the porch of his house, the man admired the beauty of his garden everyday. Not very meticulous in the maintenance of his garden, some days he would forget to water the plants and some days he would over do the watering. Soon his plants began to wilt and the lustrous green changed to pale yellow. He saw the gardens of others surrounding his own and saw theirs were as beautiful as ever, plants were green and so was their grass and beautiful flowers had blossomed.

After a few days the man's dad arrived to spend a few days with him, his dad was surprised to see a virtually dead garden. He said nothing but just observed his son's behaviour everyday. His son would always be interested in the other gardens more than his own which he practically ignored now, he would always envy  others and would always speak ill of them, all at the cost of ignoring his own garden. He would meet others, whose gardens had also not survived, and they would gossip about those who had done well to maintain their own gardens.

One day, when his dad could not take it anymore, he decided not to be a mere spectator and asked his son to sit with him, to have tea and talk. He asked his son, "Do you know why our garden is dry and dead"? The son said, "I have no idea dad, but I know the neighbours are doing well". "That's exactly the reason son, our garden is dead because you are more interested in others gardens than your own. You are constantly looking into their gardens with envy and not with inspiration. You talk ill about them when they are busy maintaining their garden. You waste your time envying them, though had you used the same time to work on your own garden, you would have one as beautiful as theirs. Instead of thinking about others, spend that time to introspect. Instead of talking about others, spend the time working on yourself. Instead of envying other, use their success as an inspiration. More than being interested in others, be inquisitive about yourself. Instead of considering others your rivals, make them your friends. See then how things will change, and success will come searching for you, your garden will blossom again, the butterfly of happiness will come and sit on the flower of contentment that grows in your heart, the birds of satisfaction will make nest again, in the tree of warmth and comfort within you".

The next day his dad woke up and walked out on the porch. What he saw brought a smile to his face. His son was busy working in the garden. For the next few days he continued to work religiously on every corner and every detail of the garden. He would now water his garden regularly, add the necessary manure and ask his friends, the neighbours for tips. Soon his hard work paid off. His garden was pretty again with pretty flowers and bright green leaves, he smiled to himself as he saw a beautiful butterfly come and sit on a majestic rose and a pair of sparrows merrily chirped from their nest on the tree. From his father's teachings and the example of his garden, he had learnt the key to success in every aspect of life.
