Max, on the outside
Eight laps to go, Max has had a superb race so far. Starting from the back of the grid he worked his place up to second place in scintillating style. It's been a hard race on a wet track in rainy conditions and this Superbike race promises to be a cliffhanger. Robert leads the race, about 6 seconds ahead of Max. Robert is a tough customer, known to be very difficult to pass. Max has an important decision to make, settle for second or make a bold run for victory.
"Max you have done well. Hold your position", came the call from the team over the radio. "But I can go for victory", replied Max. "No. No. Copy", came the response, "the conditions are treacherous, your tyres would be worn out after that long run and neither man nor machine would be in the position to go for it. Play it safe". Max was disappointed. "Copy that", came the response. He switched off the radio. A few deep breaths as he maintained his pace and followed Robert, maintaining the gap.
Six laps to go and Max is getting twitchy. "I know my condition and the bike's condition better than them", he thought for himself. "I can't just settle for second when I know I can go for victory". Just then his dad's words echoed in his mind, "People will always advise you, but do what you must. When you are out there, you have the best feel of the bike, the conditions and of yourself. If your instincts say you can do it, then just do it, just go for it. With confidence and courage no one can hold you back". Max takes a few deep breaths, gathers himself again and switches on the team radio. "Sorry to disappoint you folks, I'm going for it", said Max over the radio and before they could respond he switched off the radio again saying "see you with the winner's trophy guys". He lifted his head up, Robert still about five seconds ahead. He felt the adrenaline rush as he gave his bike the full throttle and went in for the kill.
Closing the gap at just over a second a lap he closes down the gap to Robert and is hot on his tail as the final lap begins. It's now or never for Max, his team, his family, friends and everyone around the world glued to their television screens and the commentators are going berserk. First corner of the lap and the rear end of Max's bike twitches a little, "Oh my God he almost lost control there but somehow with tremendous skill has managed to keep it under control as he goes for it again", exclaimed the commentator. Half a lap done and he has just four corners. He make a brave dive on the inside, he gets ahead, but misses the apex of the curve, runs wide and Robert doubles up on him, retakes the position. Max lines himself perfectly on the penultimate corner for an attack on the final corner. Robert defends the inside line and Max with full confidence in himself and on his bike goes for the risky outside line. "Final corner, Max on the outside", yells the commentator on the mic. On the outside he has to go the longer way but can get on the throttle before Robert, sure enough he does it and gives it all he's got and all the bike's got. The two are side by side, he presses the clutch lever, it's top gear for Max, as he gives his bike the full throttle, the front wheel raised off the ground due to the tremendous acceleration, "It's Max and Robert, neck to neck, but it's brave Max who takes victory by two hundredths of a second, he has done it, Max has done it, against all odds he has done it, Max wins, phew what a finish", exclaims the commentator. Max thumps the air in delight, his confidence and courage paid off.
Max steps on the podium and receives his winner's trophy. He's congratulated by all including Robert. In the post race interview Max is asked about the race and about switching his off the team radio. He laughs and says, "It's all about what you feel. When you are out there, not just in a race but even on life, you are the one in control, you know exactly what is happening. In that situation, rely on your instincts and your gut feeling alone. Those watching from outside will give all the advice but they are not there in the actual situation, most of the times they will convince you that you can't do it, in that situation if you feel you can do it, just switch off the radio. Don't let them convince you that you can't, back your instinct and go for it. It's very easy to settle for mediocrity and stay within your comfort zone but to truly win and to excel you need to push yourself, outside your comfort zone, take that risk, and the reward will be yours. And it's ok if you fail once in a while. When you fail just take the lesson and get moving again, if you take a risk you may succeed, but if you don't go for it you ensure you don't succeed. Don't deprive yourself of the glory, just go for it". Saying this he left the podium to the sound of a deafening applause and cheers, he had just become the favorite of the all those watching, live and on TV.
