The Result

Rohan was standing on the balcony, visibly upset. His grandfather noticed this and decided to have a word with him.

“Hey Rohan.”

“Hi grandpa.”

“You don’t look too good, what happened?”

“I’m sad grandpa. Dad was supposed to buy me a new game if I scored well in my exams. Unfortunately, I did not manage to do well,” replied Rohan, his head hanging low.

“What exactly are you disappointed about? Not getting the game or not scoring well?” enquired his grandfather.

“Well,” Rohan hesitated. “Both I guess.”

“Let’s sit down, I’m old, I can’t stand for so long,” said his grandfather.

Rohan quickly pulled two chairs into the balcony. They took their seats and were ready to continue.

“Out of the two things you are sad about, one was in your hands, the other was not. Well, it was, but not directly. So, what do you think happened? Did you work hard for your exams?”

“Yes,” said Rohan. “But I could have worked harder.”

“I’m glad you realise that.”

“What’s the point now grandpa, it’s done. I lost my chance.”

“Exactly!” replied his grandpa. “This chance is gone. So, what’s the point of crying over spilt milk!? Don’t be disappointed about the result. The result is merely a reflection of your efforts. When the result is not as expected, it means only one thing, success will need more effort.”

Rohan tried to comprehend what his grandfather was trying to explain. He started to feel a little better.

“Rohan, can you get us a cup of tea each?”

“Sure grandpa,” he said and went to the kitchen.

Once he was back, they settled in their chairs once again with their tea.

“Understand this Rohan, when you succeed analyse why you succeeded. When you don’t succeed, it is imperative you analyse why you did not. There is no failure in life. There’s success and then there’s learning. What can you do better the next time to improve your results? This is the question that matters!”

“That’s right grandpa. I think I could have worked harder.”

“It’s great you realise this! Do what is in your control well and what isn’t will take care of itself.”

“Thank you, grandpa, you make me feel better.”

“I’m glad Rohan. It’s ok to feel sad and disappointing, but remember not to spend too much time down there. You’re not going to get anything out of it! If you fall, get back up on your feet as soon as possible. Work harder and keep working till you succeed!”

“I will, grandpa! Thank you so much,” said Rohan and hugged his grandfather.

“You’re welcome, Rohan!”

“Give me your cup grandpa, I’ll keep it in the kitchen,” said Rohan and took the cup from his hand.

“Yeah, I need to go for my evening walk too,” said his grandfather and they dispersed.
