Faith

A pious man wasn’t happy with his life. He prayed by day and night for a solution to his troubles. Finally, one day God appeared.

“What troubles you, my child?” asked God. The man’s eyes welled up.

“My life is a mess, God. I feel suffocated, I feel captive, a prisoner to situations beyond my control,” he complained.

God smiled and said, “close your eyes.”

He closed his eyes, tears rolled down his cheeks.

“Now open your eyes,” said God after a couple of minutes.

He opened his eyes and found himself locked up in a cell. He looked around but God was nowhere to be seen.

“God?” he called, but couldn’t see him anywhere. He sat down in a corner.

‘The story of my life,’ he thought. ‘Seems God has abandoned me!’

“I never abandon any child of mine,” said God. The man was startled. Yet, he could not see God anywhere.

“Why do you search here and there?” asked God. “Look inside, I am within you. I am in every heart that beats. Do not search for me outside!”

The man calmed down; his eyes welled up again.

“God, why am I in this cell?”

“I was going to ask you the same. Why are you in this cell?”

“You are God, you created this world, everything happens by your will. Surely you have put me here,” said the man.

“Yes, you are right. But I have given you two important tools. Free will and faith, why don’t you use them?”

“My will is to get out and I have faith in you but I can’t break out of this cell,” replied the man.

“This my child is the story of your life.”

“Exactly!” replied the man.

“So where is your faith now?” asked God. “I had told you, look within!”

The man searched his pocket and found a key there.

“What is this?” he asked.

“That is faith, the solution to your problems!”

“But how do I unlock the door from inside?”

God smiled again. “Look closely my child.”

As the man walked up to the door, he realised the door was locked from inside.

“You are not a prisoner to situations, but to your own thinking. Your mind keeps you captive in a cell, the gate of which is locked from inside. You don’t need anyone to save you. Look inside and you will find the solutions. You can walk out anytime you want. Remember, I am always with you. Go now, open the gate, walk out and be free!”

The man opened the door and was startled by the brilliant white light on the other side.

“Go on, don’t be afraid. Remember, I am with you!”

With faith in his heart the man walked into the light and reached his home again. He felt a surge of positive energy in himself. He felt happy like he had never felt before. He smiled, thanked God and bowed in gratitude, to him who never leaves anyone alone.
