Jenny

Jenny was a new girl in the neighborhood. She had just moved in with her family. Jenny was highly educated and had moved from a small town to make a career in the city. She was a very pretty girl and had immediately caught the attention of everyone in the neighborhood. The apartment she moved into was good, with the only problem being a narrow approach road, which was dimly lit and often deserted at night.

Jenny got a good job and things were happening as she had expected when she moved to the city. Jenny was almost a super woman handling both, her professional and personal lives very well. A few months passed and she made a few friends in the new place. Everyone liked Jenny because she was kind, polite and respectful to everyone, be it the neighbours, the maids, the lift man or the old shopkeeper of the shop outside the building's approach lane.

One such routine day, Jenny left for work dressed in smart formals, looking beautiful and sophisticated as always. She stopped at the store to pick up some stuff. "Good morning uncle", she greeted the shopkeeper and handed him a list of things she needed. "Good morning Jenny. You are looking pretty today", said the shopkeeper as he went in to get the stuff. "Indeed, beautiful", commented a guy standing outside the shop, he laughed and exchanged a high five with his friend. "Ignore these rascals", said the shopkeeper to Jenny and she did just that. "I'm not seeing you in the evening these days Jenny?" enquired the shopkeeper. "Ya, I've been coming home late uncle, swamped with work at office. Anyways, bye got to go", replied Jenny and left. The guys outside overheard their conversation though.

That day Jenny got late returning home. She got out of the rickshaw and hurried down the narrow dark lane. Suddenly three guys came in front and blocked her way. Jenny was all alone. "You can't ignore us now can you?" said one of the guys. Jenny realised these must be the guys who were at the shop in the morning. "Please let me go, I don't want any trouble", said Jenny in a firm voice. A couple of girls who were walking by stopped. "Leave her alone", they said to the guys. "Go on, do you also want a taste of what we are going to do to her?" said one guy in a loud angry voice. "No, please leave, it's OK", said Jenny to the girls. The girls walked swiftly away, crying and scared of what they might do to Jenny. "Women are not safe these days", they said and rushed away with the intention of getting some help for Jenny.

"What is it, do you want money? Here take my purse and keep all the money in it", said Jenny to the three men. "We don't want your money, we want you", said the men and laughed hysterically. "Listen, I don't want any trouble, please just let me leave alone", requested Jenny. "Give us what we want and we won't hurt you, then you can go, otherwise the consequences will be really bad for you", warned one of the men. Jenny sighed and looked around, the place was deserted, not a soul in sight. One of the men came forward and grabbed Jenny by the arm and pulled her towards a corner. "Leave my hand", shouted Jenny and with a strong jerk broke free from the man's grasp, but she did not run, that surprised the men. "You want me in that corner, let's go", said Jenny seeing no other option for her safety. The men suspected she'll make a dash for it, so they escorted her, from behind and the sides to prevent her from running away.

When they reached the corner, Jenny put her purse down on a parapit, tied her hair up, unbuttoned her long sleeves and rolled them up. The men were too excited, they did not think she would come so easy. May be she does not want the harm of force they thought. "Which one of us will go first?" enquired one of the men. "How about all three of you together?" asked Jenny. The men laughed, they could not believe what they heard. "OK, if that's what you want!" said the men. Driven by lust they closed in on Jenny, these are the kind of men that are a disgrace to society, they think a woman alone is an opportunity when every man should be seeing a woman alone as a responsibility. A responsibility to ensure her safety and to protect her dignity, but some men somehow don't think that way. When they were close enough, all of a sudden, smack! Jenny lashed out a powerful high kick to the side of the head, of the man to her right, he fell straight to the ground, that was a powerful kick indeed. The other two were stunned. Jenny struck two strong punches and an elbow to the chin of the second man, who grasped his face with his hands and screamed in pain. She quickly spun around and struck a reverse hook kick to the head of the third man, followed by a strong side kick to his chest, he fell to the ground too. Again she turned her attention to the second man who was standing in shock, looking at his two friends down on the ground. "No no, please let me go, have mercy", cried the man, the tables had turned. "Sorry, all out of mercy", shouted Jenny as she gave him a powerful kick between his legs. The man bent down in pain and got another blow, a kick to the side of his head and he collapsed like a pack of cards. The three men were all lying on the ground moaning in pain. They thought Jenny was an easy target, what they did not know was that this good, simple and polite Jenny, had a black belt in the martial arts. She was a national champion and had competed at international tournaments as well. Jenny stepped back a little and shouted out loud, "I had warned you, I don't want trouble. You deserve this you scoundrels". She unfolded her sleeves and buttoned them again, opened her hair and picked up her bag and turned to walk away.

Just as she turned, she saw a group of men and women who had just arrived to the scene, all in shock and awe at what they saw. In the group was also her dad. "That's my girl!" he exclaimed, that was followed by a huge round of applause and whistles. "We are so proud of you Jenny. You sure taught these goons a lesson", said a woman from the group. "Thank you all. But I really must thank my parents. While they sent me to the best school and college, taught me the etiquettes, manners and culture , they also sent me to martial arts school to learn self defence. You might not find someone to protect you everywhere, but you definitely come across such rascals anywhere and everywhere. You must be equipped to look after yourself, fight for yourself and not be dependent on someone. You are your best defender. While it's true we need to teach men to respect women, but amongst so many gentlemen, you always come across hooligans and for that you need to be ready ", said Jenny addressing the gathered crowd.

Some men picked up the three goons and took them to the police station. Since that day, in that area, no one ever looked at a woman with bad intentions. Jenny arranged for a martial arts master to take regular classes in their building and encouraged the women to enroll and learn. Learning from Jenny's example many women took up martial arts and started learning. There might be times you find yourself alone, even amongst those who call themselves friends, in such situations you need to be equipped to fight for yourself, all the women had understood this.
