Rains and Riding

Bikers would agree riding in the rain is ecstasy but as all coins have two sides, there's a flip side to this as well. Riding in the rains on city roads can be dreadful as well.

Snails come out during the rains and the city traffic seems to adopt its pace. En route from South Mumbai to the suburbs you come across some wonderful sights, the beautifully lit up Dargah of Haji Ali, the beautiful view of the Sea link as you cruise down Worli sea face, people enjoying the rains and gusty winds at Juhu Beach etc all as you enjoy the rain hitting your face through the open visor of the helmet but look out as you see a rainbow in the puddle ahead of you. That's oil on the road, every bikers worst enemy.

Heavy traffic hinders your pace as well. The bike has to be maneuvered through traffic in a way which I feel if you look from the top would look like sand granules flowing through pebbles when poured from the top. But at least we are moving.

Rains bring a completely new challenge as well. People blinded by trucking their head deep in their umbrella!! They practically can't see where they are going yet try to cross and land up right in front of you. Worldwide the helmet is used for protection incase you fall. In India we need it for more than that. Pedestrians who want to cross the road come and stand right at the edge of the road, the helmet protects your eyes from being poked by the spokes of their umbrellas!! A use that's unique to India I am sure.

The city experiences torrential rains. Showers so heavy, no raincoat can protect the rider completely.
Here and there a little wet,
no matter what you try you are bound to get.
Heavy rains also mean water logging. You might be tempted to take the bike fast through the water splashing water around the but mind it, your bike may not like it. You might be stuck with water in your carburetor or sparkplug. And yes you may also be at the receiving end of a big splash from a car or bus that speeds by from the water beside you. The little puddles of water can be a trap too. We have interlock paver blocks used for roads that sink and also mysteriously disappear!! Well they can make a rider disappear from his/her bike seat as well, mind the puddles.

All said and done its a great pleasure to ride in the rain. The touch of cold rain water and the feel of the chilling winds, are a feeling of bliss. A cup of hot tea after the ride would just be the icing on the cake.
